We won! We fought for open standards and open source, reducing redundancy and making a better world. Ever since the idea flashed in the minds of such people like Richard Stallman, Eric Raymond, Ritchie and Thompson, Linus Torvalds, and others of that era, it was a struggle for mindshare and for adoption. Neither businesses nor individuals placed much faith in the concept, and certainly not in the business potential of sharing. Today, on the brink of closing a quarter of the 21st century, we can truly say Open source is everywhere and, on the face of it, it looks like it won. But there are strong undercurrents below this idealised surface.
